"Organic is the only way to go!"
"Organic is the healthiest!"
However, for the rest of us, the word "organic" can symbolize something else. Yep, you guessed it, the sound of money and the notion that we're about to fork over a hefty penny on that produce. With money tight these days many of us cannot afford the increase in grocery costs. So how do we find the "middle path?" How can we buy the things that really do make a difference when going conventional vs. organic? Well, I'm going to teach you. First, let's define the term "organic" and why we even need to care.
"Organic": Simply stated, organic produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones. -from organic.org
As you can see this is pretty important stuff when we think about what all goes into our body’s right? Let's keep it simple. I'm going to give you the "dirty dozen" list. This list consists of 12 items of produce that really should be consumed organically. The rest you can get conventional because the extra coating of skin protects us from any of the bad stuff.
Here we go:
6. bell peppers
8. Potatoes (including sweet)
12. Kale or other leafy greens
And there you have it….you can still buy conventional but just make sure when choosing produce you make sure to keep to organics for the “dirty dozen!”
